With the development of optical fiber communication in the direction of large capacity, high speed and long haul, the impacts of the dispersion and the nonlinear effects become more and more serious. As the key technologies of optical fiber communication system, the advanced optical modulation formats and multiplexing technologies can effectively enhance the ability against the transmission impairs. This paper mainly focuses on the optical modulation formats and multiplexing technologies. On one hand, a novel combined amplitude and phase modulation, Inverse-Return-to-Zero Minimum Shift Keying(IRZ-MSK), is proposed, and theoretical analysis is presented in detail. Through setting up a fiber communication link at speed of80Gb/s, the influences of the dispersion and nonlinear effects on the IRZ-MSK with different duty ratios are studied. The results show that the performance of the dispersion and nonlinear tolerance notably improves with the increasing of the duty ratio. What is more, a comparison study of the70%IRZ-MSK and NRZ-MSK is given, and the results show that70%IRZ-MSK has a much better nonlinear tolerance, especially the amplitude branch. On the other hand, a novel structure of eight sub-carriers generator is proposed, which can provide orthogonal sub-carriers for all optical OFDM. This eight sub-carriers generator can reduce the costs of the all optical OFDM in a real-world application. And then an all optical OFDM communication system, which based on the eight sub-carriers generator, is set up to verify its validity.
