Research On The Usability Of The "Slide To Unlock" Of Smartphone And Its Practice

The rapid development of communication technology and human-computerinteraction technology has not only brought the change of mobile phone from afunctional machine to smart one, but also made the Smartphone screen change fromnon-touch-screen to the touch-screen today. Smartphone is more than acommunication tool today，which is a mobile intelligent mobile terminal combiningcommunication, office and entertainment together. At the same time, the developingmulti-touch technology brings people a more convenience and smart experience inhandheld. However, with smartphone bearing increasing amount of information, theinteraction between people and smartphone is increasingly diversified. In order toimprove the user experience of smartphone, user-centered design becomes veryimportant. There search project of the article comes from Institute of InnovationDesign Center of Lenovo in Beijing with its purpose designed to optimize andimprove the “slide to unlock” of smartphone, based on the usability problems foundand the needs of users, from the perspective of interaction design.This article consists of three parts with its first part to study the basic theory ofusability and the importance of usability evaluation methods, etc., and focuses on theevaluation methods of usability testing; The second part is to analyze “slide tounlock” which based on the usability standards and the interaction design of thesmartphone, analyzes the technology of “slide to unlock” and smart phone featuresand study the interaction design of “slide to unlock” from the perspective of usabilityin different operating systems, then proposed the usability design principles of “slideto unlock” of smartphone; The third part focuses on the usability testing of the “slideto unlock” design of Lenovo smartphone. During the process of usability testing, weallowed users to test the screen design of smartphones by using a laboratory testingand thinking aloud. By the data analysis on testing to find the usability problems inthe “slide to unlock” design and as per the usability design principles, combined withthe results of usability testing, the “slide to unlock” design of smartphone is to beiterated.The main major innovations of this research is that by combining the design,human-computer interaction, usability engineering with smartphone features andmulti-touch technology， it analyzes the usability of the “slide to unlock” of smartphone in interaction design, thus proposing the usability design principles of“slide to unlock” of smartphone. Through the usability testing data analysis combinedwith the principles, we have iteratively designed the interaction and interface of the“slide to unlock” of Lenovo smartphone, which provides theoretical guidance andtechnical reference for the future launch of lock screen design of new smartphone.
