Dye-doped polymer fiber (DPF) is an important component used in optics andoptoelectronics. In order to extend the application of the DPF, polymethyl methacrylate rodsdoped with Coumarin540(C540) and Rhodamine6G (R6G) laser dyes and co-doped withboth of them were synthesized with methyl methacrylate, azo diethyl nitrile and dibutylphthalate based on mass polymerization method, and then they were drawn to optical fiberswith1000μm diameters.A commercial LED lamp with3W power was used as excitation source. Thefluorescence, fluorescence transmission loss and spectral down-conversion efficiency of DPFdoped with C540and R6G were studied under front surface and side illumination condition. The fluorescence property of the co-doped DPF was also studied. The results show that theStokes shifts of DPF doped with C540and R6G were70nm and50nm respectively. Under0.01mg/g and0.04mg/g (wt.%) dopant concentrations, the transmission loss of the fibers for520nm and577nm fluorescence were determined to be0.336cm-1and0.343cm-1respectively under side-illumination condition. Under front surface illumination condition, theDPF can get high spectral down-conversion efficiency with proper dopant concentration andfiber length. For the DPF co-doped with C540and R6G with equal concentration, theattenuation of fluorescence of C540was shown to be faster than that of R6G with theincreasing of fiber length under side-illumination condition. R6G absorbed the fluorescenceof C540thus a cascading spectral down conversion was realized. The DPF can be potentiallyused in the fields of fiber laser, fiber amplifier, optical fiber sensor and radiation detectionfield, etc.
