Cable is one of the most important mediators for transmitting energy and message in aerospace,shipbuilding, household appliances and other products, and the performance of the product is affecteddirectly by cable assembly quality. As a brand-new cable assembly process planning method, virtualcable assembly technology can solve many problems of traditional cable assembly effectively, such ashigh cost, poor reliability, long production cycle and so on. Virtual cable assembly technologyprovides a visualization and lifelike virtual reality platform to operators, so cable assembly processplanning can be made by the operators fast and accurately. The technology is hysteretic comparedwith rigid body assembly technology, so more and more people pay attentions to it. It has been aresearch hotspot at home and abroad in recent years, and people are looking for adequate ways tosolve such difficult problem.Based on previous research, the paper suggested a way to build virtual cable catenary modelbased on catenary theory; and it also suggested a new method to simulate complex shape of cable byusing the knowledge of mechanics of materials. The main works are as follows:1. Virtual cable model was established in the circumstances of both cable ends were suspendedbased on catenary theory, and the model of rapid calculation method was given; on this basis,themethod of building elongation cable model was discussed.2. Complex shape of cable model can be simulated by putting external force on the elastic thinbeam, which is done on the platform of finite element software according to superposition principle ofelastic beam deformation displacement.3. In order to verify the feasibility of virtual cable catenary model, the article has designed theexperimental devices, which is used in the experiments.4. A simulation example was demonstrated on the WTK virtual reality platform, which includingstatic cable model, single core cable model, more core cable model, more core winding cable model,calculation of cable tension, and demonstrating the cable dynamic assembly process.
