In recent years, as the rapid development of the sensor technology and wirelesscommunication technology, wireless body area network (WBAN) has obtained moreand more attention. Human body communication, using the human body as the mediumfor communication, has a great market potential of the applications in WBAN. IEEE806.15.6standard also regarded human body communication as one kind of physicallayer transmission. Many research institutions and universities are interested in thewireless transmission of human body communication. In this paper, we explored thetwo aspects of the human body communication, which are the performance of humanbody communication channel and MAC layer protocol.Firstly, we analyzed the research status of human body communication accordingto the status at home and abroad, and pointed out the deficiency of existing researchresults. And we analyzed and summarized the research status of human bodycommunication channel characteristics. Followed, we introduced f the network structureof the MAC layer and the MAC layer performance evaluation index of WBAN.We can see from the existing research results, there are many problems worthy toexplore. We investigate the performance of human body communication channel inorder to find whether it could meet the demand of industrial applications. First, thesignal to noise ratio at each point of human body were tested, and then we built asimulation model of human body communication transceivers. According to thecharacteristics of the human body communication we studied how the transmit power,data rate, SNR (Signal Noise Ratio) impacted the bit error rate. We built a hardwareplatform, and used the hardware platform explored the performance of real human bodycommunication channel. And the simulation results were compared with the test resultsand analysis. It is concluded that human body communication channel could meet therequirements of applications.In the second half of the article, the structure of the network of communicationwere introduced, and existing MAC layer protocols were classified, and we notednetwork topology which is suitable for the human body communication MAC layerprotocol. Next, a MAC layer protocol inserting the emergency slot was presented, and its super-frame structure and workflow were expounded. And combined scenarios ofhuman body communication, the protocol were compared with IEEE802.15.4, TDMAprotocol, PB-TDMA protocol, BodyMAC, LMAC. Finally it is concluded that the MACprotocol with emergency slot was a kind of energy saving, high throughput and lowdelay human body communication MAC layer protocol.
