In recent years, with the fast development of phase-array techniques, phased arraysystem is widely used in military affairs, automotive radar and many other fields. As theproblem of bulky mass and high cost in traditional microwave or GaAs phased arraysystem, applications aren’t satisfied and the low cost and miniaturization of phased arraysystem is the inevitable development trend. Meanwhile, the semiconductor techniquedevelops fast, especially the CMOS technology. Thus the on-chip phased array systembased on CMOS techniques has become hot topic of active research at home and abroad.Phase shifter, as the key component of phased array system, its performance such asphase-resolution, phase error, insertion loss and linearity decides the whole performanceand quality of the system. In this paper, the design method of CMOS phase shifter used for phased arraysystem is studied and a24GHz active vector sum phase shifter circuit is designed. On oneside, via analyzing the principle, performance and realization method of phase shifter, incompany with the background of application and requirements, the circuit structure arechosen. On the other hand, based on the chosen circuit structure and by analyzing thefeasible scheme of each unit, the schematic and layout design are complete in theguidance of simulation results. Finally, the chips were designed to test and analyze.A5bit active phase shifter based on CMOS TMSC90nm is designed by vector summethod. In this paper’s design achieve full-360°phase synthesizing. For5-bit operation(11.25°phase resolution) from22-24GHz, the test results shows a RMS gain error and aRMS phase error for all states of within0.5dB and3°, the insertion loss is-0.1~-3.2dB atthe center frequency, input1dB compression point is>-4dBm and DC powerconsumption is about20mW. Simulation results show that the design perform steadilywhen the temperature varies from-20℃to125℃.
