Recently, smart home systems is a hot topic which can improve our life. Smarthome has a trend towards high safety, high efficiency, low cost and high-speeddevelopment. Traditional smart home is controled by digital TV set-top boxes whichis connected to home appliances by cables. The traditional smart home has sitelayout costs and is difficult to be maintanced and updated. To cope with theseproblems, a smart home scheme based on the cloud platform is designed and itsimplementation is given.The cloud-based platform for the smart home system provides storage andcomputing. Comprehensive utilizations of embedded technology, sensor technology,short-range wireless communications technology and intelligent audio and videoprocessing technologies to form a "human-centric" smart home scheme. In thescheme, the cloud platform for the smart home provides user authentication, datastorage and home gateway connected with programming interfaces and other basicservices. On the top of these basical services, the cloud platform can also provide asoftware ecosystem to implement voice recognition, image recognition and otherintelligent applications. Smart home gateway, as a channel from the internal networkto the cloud platform, can reduce the cost and improve the stability of the system.The smart home interior network is established by ZigBee wireless communicationprotocol. The the ZigBee wireless intelligent outlet is imployed to control lights,curtains and other digital devices. As well, ZigBee protocol is applicated to controlTV, air conditioning and other equipments through a infrared signal repeater. Userscan login the cloud platform to get customized smart home services through mobilephone, tablet or PC. If permitted, the smart home system can be controled at homeor outside.Three key components in the system, named smart home gateways, wirelesssmart outlet and gesture recognition platform, are realized. Smart home gatewaybased on an ARM chip, equipped with the Linux operating system, implement thefamily network and the external network connectivity functions. Wireless smartoutlet with CC2530as the core chip, designed for indoor home environment PCBantenna to achieve wireless Internet throughout the home devices. Webcam naturalgesture recognition system is the core of the smart home system, gesture recognitionin the smart home application implementations is the main research. Gesturerecognition system using Open Source Computer Vision Library (OpenCV), obtainimage data from the webcam, pretreat the gesture image, feature extraction, gesturesmotion analysis and other treatment, and ultimately implement the application of the gesture recognition in cloud-based platform for the smart home.
