Along with fast development of network and multimedia technology, networktransmission and information using has become an important part of life, at the sametime, information security is attracting people’s attention increasingly. In order tomake the use and dissemination of information save, information hiding technique isdeveloping fastly. Digital watermarking as a branch of information hiding technique,is becoming a major study object of information security in recent years.Digital watermarking technology is an information hiding technique, and itsbasic idea is embedded secret information in digital images, audio and video and otherdigital products in order to protect the copyright of digital products, to prove theauthenticity of the product, tracking invalid product copy or provide additionalinformation of product. The secret information could be copyright symbol, serialnumber or other product-related information. Digital watermarking is generally safe,robust and invisible.This paper taking digital image as carrier, briefly introduces the researchbackground of information hiding techniques and its apply fields, as well as thecurrent development status and practical ideas, analyzes the general model ofinformation hiding technology and the basic attributes. Mainly studies on digitalwatermarking branch, describes the basic concepts of digital watermarks and itsclassification, characteristics, studies the attacks to digital watermarking andcountermeasure and studies on evaluation standard of image-based performancemeasures, details a typical digital watermarking algorithm.Based on the introduction of basic knowledge on the image carrier, discussesdigital watermarking algorithm based on discrete cosine transform, and on the basis ofthe algorithm, proposes an improved algorithm. The improved algorithm has goodinvisibility, the experimental results shows it improved the resistance to attacks ofwhite noise, signal filtering, JPEG compression and shear.
