Alongside with economic globalization and the increasing application of workflowtechnology in enterprises, more and more business activities have to go acrossorganization boundaries to cooperate with other business activities to form the so calledcross-organization workflow. SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) has now beenconsidered a de-factor solution for cross-organization workflow. Thusly, BPEL (BusinessProcess Execution Language), a widely utilized standard for service composition,becomes an important method for enterprise resource integration and cross-organizationworkflow accomplishment. But BPEL process still faces a challenge that its reliabilityperformance is not easy to maintain. In order to implement reliable cross-organizationworkflow systems and support dynamic optimization of cross-organization business, it isan essential and important work to model and analysis the reliability of BPEL processunder scientific mechanism.To address the deficiencies in related research like unable to correctly reflect theexecution logic of BPEL process, this paper model and research in the syntax andsemantic of BPEL and its logic of process. A GSPN (Generalized Stochastic Petri Net)model is proposed to support BPEL process reliability analysis. Our main works are:1. Research the syntax and semantic of BPEL and analysis the structure of BPELprocess. To express reliability, this GSPN model is mapped based on activity. Thusly ithas the feature of small coupled and well extendable.2. Analysis the special mechanisms:<link> mechanism and special activity<scope>. These special mechanisms are also modeled into our GSPN model so that ourmodel could fully reflect the whole BPEL process.3. Design architecture for analyzing reliability of BPEL process via our GSPNmodel. A practical case study shows how to evaluate reliability performance of BPELprocess and indicates that our model is effective and feasible.
