The interactive mode and interfaces of mobile phones have experienced changesas a result of the emergence of smartphones. As the smartphones developed in aconsiderable short period, there are few prior studies directly focus on the interactionof smartphones. Information browsing has played an important role in the interactionof smartphone. Identification, as the first step of browsing, has been a considerableeffective measure to get wide varieties of information. This paper mainly aimed at summarizing the latest trends of smartphone layoutsin an abstract manner–to present it as either one-dimensional lists ortwo-dimensional ones. Based on the current study on both human-smartphoneinteraction and identification, this paper used theories from experimental psychologyto compare the identification efficiency of one-dimensional lists and two-dimensionalones. According to the comparison results, a more intensive discussion about theinteractive features and applicable environment of both one-dimensional andtwo-dimensional lists was conducted. At last, several practical suggestions about howto optimize the design of the interaction features of smartphones rose accordingly. The first experiment held on computers compared the identification for numbers, letters, and shapes within a time limit of1500ms,900ms and500ms, respectively. Ineach case, the identification efficiency was compared on one-dimensional andtwo-dimensional lists, both with four items. The second experiment was conducted onsmartphones instead. In this experiment, the identification efficiency for pictures wascompared on one-dimension and two-dimensions lists both under two differentsettings: four items within1000ms time limit, and nine items within2250ms timelimit. And finally, a further individual analyze on the identification efficiency towardssixteen-item two-dimensional list within a time limit of4000ms was conducted aswell. Results of the above researches were summarized as follows:(1) there was aclear gap between the identification efficiency of computers and smartphones, which, to be more specific, showed that computers had a relatively better performance thansmartphones.(2) In general, smartphones presented in two-dimensional lists alwayshave better identification efficiency than those presented in one-dimensional lists, regardless of the type of target materials.(3) Two-dimensional lists tend to have abetter interactive capability than one-dimensional lists. Additionally, they also havesome interesting and attractive features that one-dimensional lists do not have.
