Recently, there are a number of extraction methods of terrain feature lines from regular-grid digital elevation model. However, many methods have higher algorithmic complexity and longer runtime for adapting to the terrain complicacy and diversity, which fulfill the digital elevation model on large scale hardly.Although the extraction methods based on digital image processing have general advantages of rapid speed and high efficiency,they are easily affected by noise and have lots of redundancy information. For this situation, a novel algorithm of extracting terrain feature lines is proposed based on the gray-scale morphology after analyzing the physical configuration and structural features. And the experimental results show that the ridge and valley extracted by the method is concord to the experimental terrain. Additional, a method of extracting the foot of hills using the combine of the statistical character of gray-scale image and terrain slope is proposed. The experimental results indicate that the propose algorithm is feasible.
