We are now in an age known as the Information Age, in which the modern technology is developing in a high speed. The technology of multimedia has also entered the English class of primary school in the form of image, text, audio and video, which creates a concrete and vivid teaching and learning environment. Therefore, the English teaching mode of primary school has also undergone a variety of changes. The application of multimedia in English class makes the English learning atmosphere more favorable and arouses students’ interest and curiosity, enhances teaching effectiveness.For English teaching of primary school, there are different studies at home and abroad and there are different emphases.The study of learning a foreign language in primary school by he Netherlands, Germany, France,Britain, Austria and other countries show that learning a foreign language is good for the formation of a positive learning attitude as well as the cultivation of learning strategies. But so far, because of the different research environments, different instruments, different curriculum design and other factors, the findings are not the same.English has been taught in some primary schools in our countries from the middle of the last century. The studies of English teaching in primary school have also frequently appeared in various newspapers and magazines. With the rise of multimedia and its combination with English teaching, lots of researches have been carried out by scholars, mainly aiming at the improvement and convenience brought by the multimedia technology, or the disadvantages brought by excessive use of multimedia in teaching.This essay studies from the history and current situation of China’s primary English, analyzes the contemporary situation of English teaching in primary school, the application of multimedia, its positive and negative effects. This study adopted the methods of literature and classroom observation. The author of this study went through lots of relevant information on the English Teaching in primary school and multimedia application before determining the research objectives and content. The author analyzed the effect of multimedia in English teaching with the textbook of PEP of grade three Unit 4 I Love Animals, which is divided into 6 periods, from different types of teaching: conversation, vocabulary, pronunciation, etc. Through analysis of actual teaching cases, the author explained the impact of multimedia in English teaching of primary school.This paper is divided into six chapters. Introduction is the first chapter, which presents the current situation of China’s primary English teaching and the significance of this study. Literature review is part two, which introduces the definition and characteristics of multimedia, its history and development, theories and application home and abroad of English teaching in primary school. Chapter Three is about the functions and principles of the application of multimedia of English teaching in primary school. Chapter Four analyzes the application of multimedia in English teaching of primary school. Chapter Five introduces the guidance and suggestions of the application of multimedia in English teaching. Conclusion is the last part.In this paper, it drew the conclusion that the rational use of multimedia of the the English teacher in the classroom teaching can bring a variety of convenience and progress, and improper use would affect teaching.
