Chinese textbook is an important tool to support Chinese teaching. In the new curriculum system, elective courses and compulsory courses are based on the curriculum plan to distinguish two types to fulfill the curriculum implementation requirements. Besides the textbooks of compulsory courses, the textbooks of elective courses have their necessity and value as well. Chinese elective courses play an important role in the Chinese curriculum; they have also involved in the new curriculum reform. "The ordinary high school language curriculum standard (Experiment) put forward:" The elective courses in senior high school are the expansion and improvement of the compulsory courses. Some focusing on the practical application, some focusing in the mold of appreciation, some designed to guide the exploration and research. With the further implementation of the new curriculum reform, elective course is no longer concerned as a kind of dependency or supplement to compulsory courses, they will be working together to build the new Chinese curriculum. Elective courses are considered as 5 series:they are "poetry and prose", fiction and drama ", journalism and biography", "language application" and "culture treatise". Whether the elective courses can play its important role depends on the level of compiling the textbook. To change the current situation of elective textbooks "low efficiency", we have to raise the level of codification, in-depth understanding of the teaching materials, and make use of them. This paper in view of the high school elective textbook "news and biography" series, set Jiangsu Education Edition as an example, according to the "ordinary high school language curriculum standards (experimental) principle, the use of literature analysis, summary and other research methods, intended to improve on selected readings of "news and Biography Series", so as to improve the students’ Chinese accomplishment. Biography is considered as an old and most attractive literary style in China. It has a unique literary value and educational significance. It is necessary for teenagers to read the stories of outstanding leader in the world; especially at this period of time, where they are facing the formation of outlook on life and the values, to learn from the excellent people from all walks of life. Learning "biography" will be of great significance in elective textbooks; however, there are some reasons that make the "biography" elective curriculum implementation not going well. Example like school pay less attention to the selection of elective textbooks, the limitations of teacher’s own capability, the limitations of the teaching environment, student’s interest, and etc. This paper can be divided into four parts, the importance of the elective courses, the importance of biography elective textbooks and being compiled, hope that through this research can help teachers to grasp the text, make good use of the textbooks and finally to improve teaching effectiveness.The First part, the selected readings of "news and Biography Series" on biography of research background, research contents, research significance and other aspects are being introduced to combine with curriculum position, curriculum goal and curriculum value.The second part, comprehensive analyze on the overall structure of the compulsory courses and elective courses under the new curriculum environment in Senior High School.The third part is the main part of the thesis, including the second, third, fourth chapter. It introduces the characteristics of "biography" elective, in order to further understand the biography. Analyze on the teaching objective, structure, style and other aspects from Jiangsu edition "biography" elective textbooks, which will help teachers to understand the biography and grasp the text. Finally, improve the effectiveness of making use of teaching materials, adopt the theory apply to practice; the author will be the "biography" textbook Guide (teachers) put forward the use of recommendations.
