With the deepening development of elementary education curriculum reform, more and more teachers attach importance to the effectiveness of classroom teaching. At the same time, under the impetus of the economic globalization, the needs of the students English learning and English teachers’ professional development are increasing. How to increase the effectiveness of the English class, improve teachers’ teaching skills, are becoming more and more worthy of concern in the whole society. As the beginning of a lesson, leading-in plays an important role. An English class is wonderful if it attracts students from the start and paves the way for the following learning.The study is based on Krashen’s input hypothesis, affective filter hypothesis, the meaning- assimilation theory, Piaget’s assimilation and adaptation and humanistic learning theory of Rogers. This paper studies the lead-in situation in primary school English classes, and defines teaching skills, lead-in, the ways of lead-in,the principles of lead-in and so on.This study takes Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province as a case. The object of study includes three English teachers at a demonstration elementary school, three English teachers in a normal elementary school and three English teachers of a weak elementary school, a total of nine teachers of English. By observing 45 English classes of three grades in each school, the writer fills in the record chart, then interviews the nine teachers formal or informal. Finally, analyze the overall conditions of English classes in primary school, differences of the three school and differences of three grades.The research divides lead-in into four aspects: lead-in strategies,lead-in times, lead-in functions and students’ attitudes while leading in. On the five aspects, the paper surveys the overall conditions of the cases, differences of three schools and differences of three grades. In the end, the paper discusses some traits of lead-in in English classes. Meanwhile, the paper discusses differences in different schools and different grades.Based on those discussions, the paper finally proposes some suggestions about lead-in in English classes of primary school.
