One Hundred and Eight Chinese Lessons was one of the major Chinese language textbooks used by junior high schools in the Republic of China. It is a good example for the modern Chinese language textbooks, and lays a good foundation for the development of the modern Chinese language textbooks in China.After the People’s Republic of China was founded, One Hundred and Eight Chinese Lessons was almost reflected in all Chinese language textbooks in junior high schools.In the 21 st century, One Hundred and Eight Chinese Lessons is widely discussed and focused again. In this textbook, the selected lessons are distinctive, and apparently possess scientific and systematic characteristics.In this thesis, the historical background for the compilation of One Hundred and Eight Chinese Lessons and the view of the editors on this textbook were briefly studied, and then the characteristics of the selected lessons in this textbook were analyzed—the selected lessons were characterized with scientific compilation,consistent ideas, and stressed practicality, but also "too many" texts and "superficial" contents. Besides, the selected lessons in this textbook were unavoidable to have some limitations of that period.According to the comparison between One Hundred and Eight Chinese Lessons and the Chinese language textbooks currently used by junior high schools, the following suggestions were raised for the compilation and use of the selected lessons in the current Chinese language textbooks:(1) the selected lessons are necessarily scientific;(2) specific aims are necessarily set for each lesson;(3) the practicality of the selected lessons is necessarily emphasized;(4) the reading quantity of students is intentionally expanded;(5) the guidance of writing theory is necessarily enhanced for students based on the combination of reading and writing.
