With the rapid growth of the Internet, web-assisted learning has penetrated into the foreign language teaching and displayed its full vitality. Many experts and scholars at home and abroad have had a positive try to explore in the English reading teaching with the assistance of web. In particular, a certain amount of research has been conducted in universities, of which results show that the application of web-assisted learning improve the learners’ reading competency.However, little research has been conducted of English reading teaching in web-assisted learning environment in senior high school in China. Thus, there is a urgent need to do this study.In order to justify the application of the web-assisted language in English reading from theoretical point of view, the author gives an introduction of related theories: the constructivism, learner autonomy, the web-assisted learning of EFL(English as a Foreign Language). Also the previous research of web-assisted language learning in English reading and theories about reading are introduced.All of those provide sufficient theoretic basis for this study.With the main purpose of researching the effect of the application of web-assisted learning in English reading of senior high school, three research questions are involved in this thesis. Firstly, can the application of web-assisted learning result in significant improvement in the experimental class’ s reading performance compared with that of control class? Secondly, can web-assisted learning promote students’ leaner autonomy? Thirdly, what are the experimental group’s perceptions on the application of web-assisted learning in reading?Then the author introduces an experimental study on the application of web-assisted learning in English reading with 68 subjects in Grade Two of senior high school. After quantitative and qualitative analysis, the statistical results show that the application of web-assisted learning in English reading teaching makes improvement in learners’ reading proficiency and autonomous learning ability.The results also show that a majority of students hold a positive attitude towards the new reading method.
