The Discipline Evaluation Based On H Index And Class H Indices

The construction of discipline plays a significant role in the building and developing on colleges, and the level of different subjects can reflect the overall strength of a college. As to the key disciplines, it can be the symbol and representative for the school. In addition, the output of constructing subjects relies on the analysis of discipline assessment. We can reveal the discrepancy of different disciplines between colleges, assuring the development path and direction in the future, thus the level of scientific management will be promoted and the quality of scientific research and talent training will be improved.In the previous time, our academic indices were related to the traditional bibliometrics indicators, including peer review, number of papers, number of citations, citations per paper, impact factor and Eigen factor. Since H index had been put forward in 2005 by Hirsch, who is a famous physics professors in US, many scholars recommended class H index such as G index, W index, A index, R index, H (2) index, HG index. Then each index was applied in assessing scientists, journals, research institutions, academic conferences and patents. We will study the evaluations in different subjects with the aid of H index and other class H indices, in order to reflect the academic gradation of a subject in a certain period of time.By using Web of Science (short for WOS in the paper) database, we select the data of 30 colleges respectively from 2003 to 2012 including physics, chemistry applied, ecology and biology reducing to the science subject and business, management science, economic and statistics concluding to the economic-management subject. Then we can calculate the value of H index and 6 class H indices. Comparing with the scores assessed by the ministry of education degree center discipline, we have found the results in the following study eventually.(1) H index and other class H indices have the difference in assessing the two subjects, which can predict the science discipline more accuracy;(2) There are obvious deviations between the actual levels with the scores from Degree Center in the part of the subjects, thus we suggest that H index and other class H indices be introduced in the new disciplines evaluations.(3) H index has a significant correlation with other 6 class H indices in assessing.We can have the revelation that we should select the indices on discipline evaluation objectively and quantitatively and use less duplicate indicators. Furthermore,we can have a detailed analysis on the possible influencing factors, exploring and revising different methods for every subjects, and reflecting the actual results of discipline assessment.
