Abstract/Summary:
China’s college counselor system is an important part of higher education system with Chinese characteristics. However, with professional development, all sorts of problems and shortcomings emerge in college counselors’ work. Many scholars carried out such research from the perspective of social role concept. Nevertheless, through systematic literature review, this study indicates that it can still apply methods of classification and induction, in-depth interview and grounded theory to conduct extended research on consulers’ role conflict and its influencing factors.Based on literature review, by applying classification and induction method, this dissertation puts forward seven core ideas including counselors’ role conflict, its causes and effects and so on. Then, through in-depth interviewson counselors, qualitative research was conducted by using grounded theory method. Finally, six of the ideas were verified:(1)External role conflict was formed between limited ability, insufficient motivation and a variety of expectation, specification and requirements; (2) Generalized work content leads to counselors’ ambuigity in role understanding; (3) College-university duo-administrative system presents conflict in instruction execution; (4) Currently, college counselors’ role positioning is too much a move to pursue the greatness or perfection, far exceeding their capacity limit; (5) The cause of role conflict is because counselors’ work scope and level have been broadened due to students’ changes in concepts and social development. Insufficient subjective cognizance leads to imbalance in objective practice. In addition, improper college management and poor support system cause further imbalance; (6) Political education is the core of college counselors’ role positioning. These clear political characteristics constraint the counselor’s role positioning. On this basis, combined with the interview data, a model of consulers’ role conflict was concluded. The model suggests that: The direct cause of counselor’s role conflict comes from expectation-reality contradictions, instruction contradictions and ambiguous cognition, in which expectation-reality and instruction contradictions belong to objective causes, while cognitive contradiction belongs to the conception level. The primary factors of conselors’ role conflict lie in three aspects:role positioning, political positioning and students need, professional belonging and insufficient ability. As regards practical reasonsof the counselor’s role conflict, by drawing experience from foreign universities, two most important links were put forward to solve counselor role conflict at objective and subjective levels:One is to realize the separation of the ideological & political education from student affairs service. The other is to pay attention to the training of counselor’s career devotion and initiative.
