As an important spatial carrier of industrialization and urbanization, the goal of Chinese development zones has gradually transformed from rapid development to high quality development. Except for the spatial production of "object", harmonious development of "people" is increasingly viewed as a key foundation for the sustainable development of development zones. Currently, Chinese development zones are generally faced with complex social contradictions and emotional indifference of local residents, which have become serious obstacles to the transformation and upgrading of development zones. Based on subjective experience of places, sense of place is the emotional connection of people and place, which can be an important characterization of socially and culturally spatial changes of development zones and implicitly mental structure changes of residents, and residents’sense of place is conductive to reveal the underlying transition problems of development zones. Economic & technical development zones and high-tech industrial development zones are two important types of development zones in China, whose industrial and social structure are different because of distinct construction mechanism. Thus sense of place of residents and its influence on the development of development zones may also be different. With the increase of new migrant families, the surrounding women’s spatial pursuit and sense of place have become important factors connected to the harmony of development zones. On the basis of Relph’s theory of sense of place as well as investigation of residents in Changsha Economic & Technical Development Zone and High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, the study is mainly about the comparison of the characteristics and formation mechanism of surrounding residents/female residents, in order to better explore the way of sustainable and healthy development adapted to people’s demands of development zones. This paper is divided into six chapters. The first chapter mainly introduces research background and significance, main contents, research methods and technical route. The second chapter is literature review, systematically analyzing concept, connotation and construction mechanism of sense of place, sense of place of development zone and woman, as well as relevant empirical research. Based on Relph’s theory of sense of place together with construction features of economic & technical development zones and high-tech industrial development zones, the third chapter is theoretical analysis, which compares formation mechanism of the two kinds of development zones, then puts forward two hypotheses. The fourth chapter is investigation design and implementation, emphasis on Likert scale based on Relph’s theory of sense of place, and brief introduction about case grounds and research implementation. The fifth chapter is empirical analysis, which compares characteristics of surrounding residents/female residents of economic & technical development zone and high-tech industrial development zone in Changsha, and analyzes the results according to their features. The sixth chapter is conclusion and enlightenment. It shows that residents’ "external sense of place" is from the perception of development zones and their functional demands, which is the lower level sense of place, mainly influenced by personal background and local environment, while, residents’"inner sense of place" comes from the in-depth interaction with development zones and their adaption, which is the higher level sense of place and the symbol of residents’ integration into development zones, mainly affected by practical activity and social relationship. However, "inner sense of place" of residents interviewed is generally weaker than "external sense of place", it means that residents’sense of place surrounding development zones is at a low level. As far as the two kinds of development zones concerned, compared with the labor-intensive manufacturing industry in economic & technical development zones, the high-tech industry and high level talents in high-tech industrial development zones should be helpful to enhance residents’sense of place. But the case studies of economic & technical development zone and high-tech industrial development zone in Changsha find that, whether "external sense of place" or "inner sense of place", residents’ in Changsha Economic & Technical Development Zone is deeper than residents’ in Changsha High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, and the difference between women is more obvious. It reveals that these two kinds of development zones may confront the pronlem of homogenization, and high-tech industrial development zones may be faced with low-end dilemma. Because of the important role of industrial competitiveness, level of public service and reputation for strengthening residents’ sense of place, it suggests that different kinds of development zones should strive to improve the quality of industry and public service, actively cultivate characteristics, and pay attention to the needs of special groups like women, so as to make development zone become a kind of space suitable for both work and living, and achieve sustainable and healthy development.
