The newly revised "English curriculum standards for primary school " in 2011 points out the language skills primary school students in each academic year need to master clearly. According to the requirements of new, the building of students’ oral English ability has become one of the main goals of primary school English teaching. There are many problems in the oral English teaching and ability of primary school students, such as the lack of attention, and the incorrect teaching methods. This research studied the status of oral English teaching of a primary school in Wuxi, Jiangsu province via literature research, investigation study and classroom observation, aiming at the oral English study and teaching. Some favorable factors to develop the primary school students’ oral English ability has been found throughout the research, while there are still many problems,such as lacking of attention to oral English during daily English teaching as a whole,and incorrect teaching methods somehow of oral English teaching.Through the questionnaires and interviews of the school teachers and students, combining with classroom observation, the author found that there are a variety of reasons to the present problems of oral English teaching in the primary school, not only the lack of attention, but also objective limit factors such as poor school facilities, but the insufficiency of teachers’ professional quality is the main reason. Therefore, on the one hand, the primary school English teachers need to update the teaching concept to put more attention to the oral English teaching, on the other hand, to improve their professional quality in order to be able to solve practical problems. In this way, the primary school English teachers can take effective teaching strategies according to the real teaching condition and students’ current oral English level, in order to promote primary school students’ oral English.
