This research aims to make a survey on oral English teaching status in emigrationmiddle schools in the reservoir area of Chongqing, discuss existing problems and putforward countermeasures for improving the oral English teaching quality. Oral Englishteaching is always a weak link in English teaching in China, especially in countryside orrelatively remote areas; there is no leaning atmosphere for English study as well as nopractice opportunity. While most areas of Three Gorges Reservoir Area are backwardareas in western China, these areas integrate common characteristics of western regionsas well as their own characteristics, although they have achieved great development,there is still a great gap. Therefore, this paper selects oral English teaching status inemigration middle schools in the reservoir area as the research subject.Firstly, this paper introduces theoretical background and practical background fororal English teaching, explains the significance of oral English teaching in the wholeteaching process, and summarizes the oral English teaching status in China as well asoral English teaching status in middle schools in the reservoir area. Secondly, this papermakes a brief review of oral English teaching research achievements in the teaching athome and abroad and analyzes the theoretical basis for oral English teaching. Thirdly,this paper discusses problems existing in the oral English teaching in emigration middleschools in the reservoir area of Chongqing by means of questionnaire survey. Design20questions with regards to students’ attitudes towards oral English learning, conditions oforal English lessons offered by the schools, using conditions of teaching facilities,learning strategies as well as examination modes, select196middle school studentsfrom Wushan Middle School to receive the questionnaire survey and make statisticalanalysis on the data obtained.The survey results show that oral English teaching in middle schools in thereservoir area has achieved certain effects; however, teachers and students’ great effortsare still needed. The students have certain English foundation, but their oral Englishexpression ability needs to be improved. After the questionnaire survey, this papersummarizes problems currently existing in oral English teaching in the reservoir area, and puts forward targeted countermeasures corresponding to language input and outputtheories as well as oral English teaching strategies. For example, teachers adoptdiversified oral English teaching methods, reasonably apply various teaching resources,apply oral English test to promoting oral English teaching and take other methods toimprove the oral English teaching quality in middle schools in the reservoir area.
