Creative drama is a kind of art education,which is very important in western countries,such as those in Europe,America and Australia and so on.Creative drama is,on the basis of listening and speaking teaching,through play,to help students acquire the competence of English in terms of knowledge,skills,and comprehending ability.Although in foreign countries,creative drama has been widely applied in the classroom teaching practice of primary and secondary schools,there are few researches on creative drama teaching.In China,creative drama is still in the exploratory stage.This study carried out experimental teaching in Guilin Zhuoran Primary School.The author tries to explore the role and effect of creative drama teaching method when applied to the primary school English classroom,hoping to draw some implications about how to stimulate students' interest in learning English and how to improve students' oral English ability.In this study,through questionnaires,interviews,tests and other research methods,with two classes of Guilin Zhuoran Primary School,totally 80 students in Grade Four as the subjects,the author attempts to testify two hypotheses:Compared with traditional teaching methods,a)the application of creative drama in primary school English classroom teaching can better stimulate students' interest in learning English;b)the application of creative drama in primary school English classroom teaching can better improve the students' oral English ability.The research results show that:a)creative drama applied to English classroom teaching can stimulate and enhance students' English learning interest more than the traditional teaching methods.Students are significantly stimulated specifically in the aspects of awareness in English learning,the motivation of using English or learning English,and their confidence and satisfaction of learning English;and also their level of participation in the classroom is greatly raised;b)creative drama applied to English classroom teaching can effectively improve students' oral English ability more than the traditional way of teaching,which is reflected in both students global performance and such specific performance as recitation,self introduction and dialogues.Basing on the research results,this paper puts forward some suggestions to the primary school English teachers:1)English teachers should read more creative drama books related to the theory of creative drama teaching,and then boldly practice in their teaching.2)In order to effectively carry out creative drama activities in the classroom,they cannot ignore the purpose of activities,so as to better achieve the purpose of creative drama teaching.3)They should not neglect the use of English language in the teaching of creative drama,so as to achieve the goal of English teaching.4)In the process of organizing creative drama activities,teachers need to pay attention to the establishment of activity rules,so as not to lose control of the classroom,resulting in effective and efficient classroom teaching.
