The Study On Ancient Greek Ephebia( State Gymnasium) Education

Ancient Greek is the birthplace for western civilization. The stadium of ancient Greek is not only the stage of its public sports in the city-state but also a major education institution even an important part in its cultural heritage. And among these stadia, ephebe is the most influential one. As the tertiary education in the education system of ancient Greek, ephebe education put military and gymnastics training in the first place. It is a significant symbol of ancient Greek education, having an indelible influence on Greek.In this paper, the origin and mode of the ancient Greek stadium ephebe education are studied, including five parts. The first part is Prolegomena, including research background and its significance, domestic and overseas literature review, definition on related concepts, analysis and research methods used in this paper; The second part is the study on the origin of ancient Greek stadium ephebe education and its developing course as a public education institution. Ephebes are official, existed as the only official education institution in the old days. The third part is about the operating mode of ephebe education in detail. Ephebe spread across ancient Greek, with over one hundred city-states, but typically marked in the operating mode of Athens ephebe. Therefore, this paper takes Athens ephebe as an example to study on operation of ephebe eduction in particular. The study involves its philosophy of school management, recruitment enrollment of students, specific implementation of education and selection of authorities. The part four sums up the educational features according to its operation, including three aspects, legislation and its implementation based on state force;living rehearsal of citizen; take advantage of the opportunity for educational target; The part five is conclusion about whole condition concerning to ephebe education, reflecting on the education of our country. Since country-states has evolved and changed, ehpebe lost its original feature, however, as a part of Greek civilization, ephebe was a strong Greek strength which made an significant influence on Greek people in those days. And it inspires contemporary education to consider and reflect, and its physical and military education still generates graven enlightenment and profound research value for us.
