The problem-solving ability is a basic ability for students to participate in social life. The task of teachers is not only to impart knowledge, but also to cultivate students’ ability to discover, analyze and solve problems. In 2003, problem-solving ability has become an important part of PISA testing. The cultivation of students’ ability to solve problems is the need of the new curriculum reform, but also the need of students’ development. At present, the research on problem solving in China has the following characteristics. First, the practical research mainly focuses on the psychological mechanism, teaching mode, teaching design. But there is little research how to improve students’ problem solving ability in teaching practice. Secondly, the research direction has gradually changed from the specialized theory research to the research combining with the specific subject education. In terms of subject, the research on mathematics, physics and chemistry is more and the research on biology research is less. In high school biology teaching, how to cultivate students’ ability to solve problems, it is a realistic problem faced by the teachers in the first line.In order to adapt to the trend of the current education reform and to meet the students’ individual development needs, this study attempts to find a balance between improving students’ academic performance and improving students’ ability to solve problems, and to make suggestions for first line teaching. This research mainly adopts literature method, questionnaire survey method, interview method and action research method. The questionnaire is to investigate the status of students’ biological problem solving ability. The interview is to investigate teachers’ usual teaching and views on cultivating students’ ability to solve problems. In the survey data analysis, the results are as follows. There are three major problems in the aspect of students, such as weak awareness of problems, lack of the ability to solve problems, and no systematic problem solving strategies. The teachers’ problems lie in that their teaching idea is behind the times, the teaching form is single and they ignore their own professional quality promotion.Based on the theories of constructivism and humanism, combined with the survey results and four years of teaching practice, this research proposes five suggestions to cultivate students’ problem-solving ability in biology teaching of senior high school. Firstly, pay attention to cultivating students’ problem consciousness. Secondly, guide students to make correct problem representation. Thirdly, carry out the strategy of problem-solving teaching. Fourthly, review and reflect on the problem-solving process in time. Fifthly, promote thinking aloud. The study examines the effect of the above suggestions through the teaching practice. It proves that it is feasible to improve the students’ problem-solving ability in a certain extent through appropriate teaching methods in biology teaching of senior high school.
