Ecological civilization, a new form of civilization about the harmony between man and nature, is the product of a certain stage during the process of human civilization development. Education is the essential way to transform human’s soul, and it can help the public foster the idea of respecting nature, coexisting with nature and protecting nature. And geography education palys the roles of base and pillar in the popularization of sustainable development, which will help promote human’s awareness of ecological civilization.Based on the data obtained from the literature survey, this paper employs a research on the main advantages and problems of ecological civilization education in geography teaching of middle school, and proposes the corresponding measures and suggestions. According to the findings, the main advantages are as followed:(1) the study object of geography education includes the relationship between man and nature, which is consistent with the purpose of ecological civilization education; (2) geography curriculum emphasizes the environmental awareness and the concept of sustainable development, and the coexistence of human and nature is the core of curriculum; (3) the design of geography curriculum has always permeated the concept of scientific development, including obeying the laws of nature, achieving the harmonious development of man and nature, taking the road of regional sustainable development. The main problems includes; (1) the ecological civilization quality of middle school students are generally low, so are some teachers; (2) classroom-centered teaching model pays little attention to practice, and teaching content lacks integrity and systematicness; (3) the awareness of ecological civilization are absent in society and families. Therefore, we propose the following suggestions:taking the classroom education as the main method to teach middle school students the knowledge of ecological civilization; fostering their awareness of ecological civilization in extracurricular activities; and developing their ecological behaviors by enhancing the construction of campus culture. The above findings provide some reference for strengthening ecological civilization education in geography teaching of middle school.
