The thought of self-management had a long history and got vigorous development in many fields because of its strong application value. Recently, it has been attached great importance by the Party and the state. The 17th National Congress of the Communist Party of China explicitly put forward the self-management and closely linked it with democracy, affairs at the grass-roots level and efficiency, etc. In addition, along with the development of higher education in our country, student management increasingly became a research hotspot, especially the undergraduates’self-management. With the theme of improving undergraduates’self-management ability, this paper studied S University as a case by using the method of literature and interview. More specifically, this paper mainly divided into the following several parts:Firstly, relevant concepts and theoretical bases of improving undergraduates’ self-management ability. On the basis of defining the relevant concepts, the paper explained theoretical bases of improving undergraduates’ self-management ability from the perspective of management, sociology and psychology.Secondly, the realistic status and existing problems of improving undergraduates’ self-management abilities. The author interviewed some teachers and students of S University in-depth, which was studied as a case. By sorting and analyzing the interview materials, the author concluded the realistic status of improving undergraduates’self-management abilities and pointed out some problems.Thirdly, the causes of the existing problems of improving undergraduates’self-management abilities. In view of existence problems, this paper analyzed reasons from both the external and the internal aspects. External causes included family aspect, university aspect and social aspect. Internal cause was the undergraduates itself aspect.Fourthly, the path of improving undergraduates’self-management abilities. Put forward the measures of improving undergraduates’ self-management abilities from the three views of macroscopic, the middle and microcosmic. Universities should play the dominant role in improving undergraduates’self-management abilities:change ideas, setting up the main body relationship between teachers and students; innovate systems, providing institutional guarantee; build platforms, creating favorable conditions. Departments should step up guidance:perform each link of Management by Objective well. Undergraduates should be responsible for their own growth and development:set up the consciousness of self-management and grasp the methods of it.
