In the 21st century, population, resources and environmental problems have become hot issues that people concerned about. With the development of economy and progress of society, people have greater demand for resources thus the environmental problems deteriorated gradually. Frequent happenings of environmental problems made people realize its seriousness step by step. In order to solve these problems and achieve the harmonious development between human society and environment, environmental education is the only way. Middle high school students are closely linked with our nation’s future. And their quality has great impact on social progress and development. Therefore, it is the priority to improve their quality on the whole. Environmental education aims at cultivating citizens of high quality that benefit the progress and development of all human society, making itself an important part of modern quality education. Geography of middle high school has close connections with environmental education and is a key subject of it as well. It is a significant issue confronting the subject of geography to bring students into right attitude towards environment and cultivate good environmental behavior of them.This thesis first gives a general introduction to the research background, summarizing the current research situation at home and abroad and put forward its research objective, content, methods, techniques, innovations and distinguish features. And then this thesis explores the theoretical basis from the perspectives of relevance between geography teaching in high school and environmental education, necessity of applying environmental education in high school period, the expected goals of applying environmental education as well as the possible approaches of achieving above mentioned goals.Environmental education which is a comprehensive interdisciplinary activities, involves a lot of areas, and the subject of geography in high school has some unique advantages in the implementation of environmental education. The ultimate goal of environmental education is not only to enable students to master a certain knowledge of environmental science, but also to cultivate students’ environmental consciousness, skills and good environmental behaviors.The research part of the article uses teachers and students in No.1 middle school ofJingmen as an object to conduct a survey about the present situation of the implementation of environmental education in high school geography teaching. This part firstly elaborates the research purpose, content, design and implementation of the questionnaire; secondly it analyzes the present situation and effects of environmental education; thirdly, according to the result of investigation and analysis, it finds out the teaching problems in the implementation of environmental education in high school and analyzes the reasons for these problems. Problems mainly include that students’ consciousness of environmental protection needs to be strengthened, geography teaching of environmental education in high school is formalistic, the teaching mode of environmental education which is confined to classroom is too single, and the effect of teaching which is limited to books is not ideal. These are mainly because of bad affect of the exam-oriented education, little attention of environmental education, lack of teaching resources, lack of qualified teachers, and the lack of evaluation standard of environmental education.And then the author puts forward countermeasures of implementing environmental education in high school geography teaching. We need to strengthen students’concept of environmental education, environmental knowledge, environmental consciousness, and their environmental behaviors in middle school. Finally, the thesis summarizes the main points of the paper.
