English is the world’s most widely used language and its position is becoming more and more prominent in English education. Nowadays, the popularity of English education is growing, and even extends to the primary school. English study in primary school emphasizes the development of interest and the learning of basic English knowledge. English in middle school plays a connecting role in domestic English education system. On the basis of developing interest, it pays attention to train their comprehensive abilities to use English in listening, speaking, reading and writing, which is measured by learning and using vocabulary. So vocabulary learning and teaching plays a very important role in English study. Due to the lack of effective learning and memory strategies, how to memorize words well is a big problem for middle school students. However, the traditional vocabulary teaching attaches importance to the usage, and ignore the introduction of systematic teaching methods for long-term memory and the reproduction of English words. I came into contact with the concept of mind mapping in teachers’ training and found it’s an efficient organizational thinking tool in the learning process, which can stimulate the unlimited potential of memory. Can mind map connect with vocabulary teaching? Can it help us explore effective ways for teaching and learning in vocabulary study,in order to change the fact that memorizing vocabulary is difficult and boring? They are the questions that this thesis tries to answer. In the research process, the writer tries to use different ways to solve the problems, including literature research, experimental study, questionnaire and interview. According to summarize and analyze the experimental data and results, the writer improves that vocabulary mind map can improve the students’ word recognition, word extraction and reproduction. Meanwhile, it can help students to change the habit of memorizing words and improve their interests in English study.
