How to coordinate urbanization and ecosystem has attracted much attention. This includes many scholars and government agencies. The coordinated development can be achieved by simultaneously minimizing the negative impact on the ecosystem and improving the ecosystem. We can find the main coupling factors between the development process and the ecosystem of the Jiangsu provincial urbanization by analyzing the coupling correlation. We adopt the "theory- Correlation Analysis-Analysis of factors regulating’’ approach. First, we introduce the related background, including the summarization of the related theories. Second, we study the correlation between the Jiangsu provincial urbanization process and the eco-environment by correlation and time series analysis. This is achieved through building an evaluation index system. Third and finally, we identify the coupling factors between the population, economy, and space and the ecosystem, respectively. This is achieved through the analysis of the evaluation results. We also offer the corresponding solutions.After time-series analysis the coupling relationship between Jiangsu Province urbanization and its ecological environment from 1994 to 2012, get the conclusions as following:The coupling shows an oscillation pattern. During the 1990-2000 period, the coupling shows overall downward oscillation pattern. During the 2000-2006 period, it shows the monotonous rising pattern. During the 2006-2012 period, it shows overall downward oscilation pattern again. Each stage displays different evolution pattern. We find that the pattern is complicated. The eco-environment construction lags behind. The government policy greatly affect the coupling.The Jiangsu provincial urbanization index is gradually increasing. The urbanization remains at high-speed phase. The cities are expanding, but the space increase exceeds the corresponding population and economy increase.The ecosystem evolution of Jiangsu province displays oscillation pattern. The elastic index is better than the pressure index and the sensitivity index. The pollution emission remains high. The resource per person is decreasing, but the capacity of environment protection and remedy increases.The correlation index between the urbanization and the ecosystem exceeds 0.6. Among them, the population and space has higher correlation index whereas the population and economy has middle level correlation index. The correlation indexes between the ecosystem and the following aspects exceed 0.65: the urban population percentage, the second production population percentage, the third production population percentage, the GDP ratio of the third production, the urban average income, the highway per 10000 people. They have high correlation, indicating higher couplings.The regional coupling level decrease from the south to the north in Jiangsu province, indicating the dependence of the coupling on the economy level. The richer regions have invested more on infrastructure and environment protection. Consequently, they have better coordination between the urbanization and the ecosystem.We propose the corresponding adjusting and controlling methods for each region.
