The Investigation And Analysis On The Current Status Of The Sporting Events Translators In Zhejiang Province

Since the 21 st century, China’s comprehensive national strength has constantly been enhanced. In the political, economic and cultural fields, China is playing a more and more important role in the world stage. In sports field, a growing number of the world’s major sporting events have been held in our country. Every successful sporting events depend on the participation of the translators. In addition, football, basketball, volleyball and other professional club leagues are booming. We introduce a large number of outstanding foreign coaches and athletes. They not only improve the competitive level of the league, but also attract more audiences. We need professional translators to communicate with foreign coaches and athletes, to layout and understand the tactical arrangements and to arrange their everyday life.This study focuses on the current status of the sporting events translators in Zhejiang Province. I have made several questionnaires and interviews with the translators and the organizers in the International sports events, as well as the translators and the leaders in the league club. From the questionnaires and interviews, I have learnt the basic situation of the sporting events translators, their academic, professional and foreign language proficiency circumstances, their income, their work stress and physical condition, their demands, their education background, their evaluation from other people, and the factors which constraint their translation quality.Through the induction and analysis, I have made the following conclusions on current status of the sporting events translators in Zhejiang Province: 1, the age of the translators is suitable; the majority of them have sports or English education background; they have bachelor degree or above, they have got CET4 certificate or above; and they have much work pressure. 2, the large-scale international sports event requires a lot of sports translators; the league club translators are relatively saturated. 3, the translators are mainly made up of the assigned professional translators, temporary employed translators and volunteers; from the training ways, various colleges and universities, especially the sports colleges and foreign language colleges are the most extensive and most important training bases. 4, for the sports translators’ working standard, the external people express relative satisfaction, on the other hand, the translators themselves are satisfied with their jobs. 5, the restricting factors of sports events translators are listed as following: English level is low, lack of sports knowledge of English, lack of sports experience, lack of translation work experience, working market is small, the management for the translators is not standardized, etc..In view of the above problems, I put forward that: the relevant departments strengthen the training of the sports translators in the sports colleges and universities, strengthen the training pathways of the sports translators, strengthen the management of the sports translators, make a qualification for all sports translators, improve the referees and athletes’ English, etc... This paper provides some theoretical ideas and practical recommendations for improving the quality of the sports translators and better carrying out the international sports events.
