| It is generally known that vocabulary teaching is an important part in our English teaching as a foreign language.For many years,the traditional vocabulary teaching in primary and middle schools neglects the teaching students an effective way of mastering English words.As a result,students’ learning of English vocabulary is not very satisfactory.As we know,English belongs to an alphabetic language system,and the sound and spelling of words is corresponding with each other.So the most of English learners depend on phonological information to learn new words.IPA(International Phonetic Alphabet),as the traditional methods to learn vocabulary,does not take the relationship between sounds and letters into consideration,making it rather difficulty for students to memorize English words.Phonics,which has becoming more and more popular in the teaching of English in primary and middle schools is believed to be an effective way for vocabulary teaching in western countries,for it can establish the relationship between sound and letter.Thus phonics can improve students’ vocabulary reading and spelling ability.According to the vocabulary learning situation in primary schools,the present study tries to use phonics to teach vocabulary in a primary school.The purpose of the study is conducted to investigated whether the application of phonics in English vocabulary teaching in a primary school is effective on developing students’ vocabulary reading and spelling ability.The subjucts of the experiment are from Grade 5 in a primary school in Shawan County of Xingjiang.Phonics method was implemented to the EG while teaching vocabulary.The experiment lasted eighteen weeks that from September 2016 to January 2017.The experiment instruments are tests and questionnaire.The results of the experiment show that 1)EG students who learned phonics have more gains,especially students possessing phonics knowledge could read and spell words more fluently and accurately than those who lacked of phonics;and that 2)the EG students became more confident to learn vocabulary.In conclusion:(1)The phonics can improve Xinjiang minority primary students’ English vocabulary reading and spelling ability;(2)The phonics canstimulate Xinjiang Minority primary students’ interest in learning English Vocabulary;(3)In the aspects of spelling and stress,the Uighur language have negative transfer to English vocabulary reading and spelling in the phonics teaching. |
