The city of Bengbu lies in the north-central part of Anhui province along the HuaiRiver with rich resources, pleasant climate and beautiful scenery. Since ancienttimes, the line of Qinling Mountains-Huaihe River has been regarded as China’snorth-south border. Bengbu is typical of the plain landscape along the middle and lowerreaches of the Yangtze River with the flat land, which has abundant recourses and distinctfolk customs. With the development of economy, a great change has taken place in Bengbu.As the living quality has improved, people have a greater demand on living standard. As aresult, all kinds of mass sports spring up. It is important for Bengbu’s mass sports to knowabout the development of badminton.This thesis makes a study of the development situation of mass badminton in villagesand towns of Bengbu. It covers the following aspects: the developmental environment, theparticipants, the present situation and means, and consumption features. Severalcharacteristics and problems about the development situation of mass badminton invillages and towns of Bengbu are revealed as follows.1. The environment and climate of Bengbu, a key factor of rapid development of massbadminton, is very suitable to carry out this sport. Besides, the public in villages and townsof Bengbu pursue a comfortable and relaxed way of life, which also improves thedevelopment of mass badminton.2. At present, the main participants of mass badminton in villages and towns ofBengbu are those with the age from35to45. Most participants have college degree orabove, and they are usually staff in enterprises and public institution, teachers and students.The group of people has stable income, much free time and consumption ability. However,the younger and the older of this group are not so much that it influences thecomprehensive development of mass badminton in villages and towns of Bengbu.3. The motivation of participating mass badminton for the public in villages andtowns of Bengbu is mainly to keep fit and enjoy life. The sport is carried out in various ways but it is limited to small groups of people, esp. among relatives, friends andcolleagues and to certain places, esp. school stadiums, clubs, parks and plazas. It is usuallytaken three times a week in different times of a day and it lasts for one or two hours.4. The sites of carrying out mass badminton are mainly free in villages and towns ofBengbu. As the badminton in rural areas has just started out, standard stadiums forbadminton are not enough (usually one for each town, or even none). The distribution ofstandard stadiums is uneven, mainly in schools. The games of mass badminton are seldomheld and only attract small groups of people. The clubs develop slowly and suffer someproblems.5. The consumption ability of participants is relatively low in villages and towns ofBengbu. Most people spend about300Yuan on this sport every month, and what’s worse,some people can’t reach this level.6. The number of mass badminton participants is large in villages and towns ofBengbu and the ways of life has changed a lot, which provides a huge market for the sport.But the development is not perfect at present, which can not satisfy the needs ofparticipants.
