One of the most important teaching tasks is to try our best to improve the students’ reading ability in the class. Also, one of the aspects that the new curriculum reform mainly focuses on is how to improve the students’ reading ability effectively. However, after careful research in many schools, the author notices that the students’ reading ability is not pleasant, there are all kinds of problems in the students’ reading process. As a result, the author wants to take the study in S middle school in Wujiang area in order to improve the students’ reading ability.This study consists of five chapters.The first chapter:First, state the reading standards in the new curriculum reform and the importance of the English reading. Second, the literature review part introduces the studies on English reading both in China and abroad. Third, introduce the definitions of the reading and reading ability. Finally, introduce the three basic reading models and the different factors which influence the students’ reading ability.The second chapter:the author investigates the current conditions of the students’ reading ability in S middle school in Wujiang area. Students and teachers in this school are the main objects. The research methods include statistical investigation and interview methods. By analyzing the data and the results of the interview, the author makes a conclusion on the current conditions of the students’ reading ability.The third chapter:After analyzing why the students lack of reading abilities in S middle school, the author states the factors which that cause the problems. The problems mainly include four aspects, they are:the factors of the students themselves, the factors of the teachers in the school, the family background and the school management.The fourth chapter:This part states the effective ways to improve the students’ reading ability. This part also includes four aspects, that is:the teaching management of the school, the English teachers in the school, the students’ parents and the students themselves.The fifth chapter:The author has a deep reflection on the study which has lasted for more than a year. At the same time, the author gives some advice on how to improve the students’ reading ability to most of the educators and English teachers. At last, the author states the disadvantages of the research and the hope for the improvements of the students’ reading ability.
