By reflecting its growing processes, the study of traditional ethnic sports sets a clear direction for its development and provides constant impetus for its prosperity. Based on abundant academic journals, this study adopts bibliometrics to makes detailed statistics on the quantity, theme distribution, authors’ features and citations, etc.of the theses on traditional ethnic sports in 2005-2014 CSSCI sports journals, reviewing its research approaches, themes, trends, perspectives, fields and innovations. Then the following researchers can refer to this to break the bottlenecks and avoid low-level and repetitive studies. Thus, this study can contribute to the promotion of academic achievements application and the sound development of traditional sports practice. The main research conclusions are as follows:1.Quantity: The number of released theses in CSSCI sports journals is closely related to the column setting and the capacity of articles involved. Though the quantity may change as the policy modifies, the total number keeps stable with a flexible distribution.2.Theme distribution: The study themes on traditional ethnic sports are out of balance. The study on martial arts is still the overwhelming majority as to folk sports and Body-building Qigong.3.Authors’ features: The authors mainly focus on 35-45, 27-34 and 45-54 age groups, among which the 35-45 age group are the largest. The doctors released more articles than postgraduates, while associate professors released more articles than lecturers, professors and assistants. There are 97 kernel authors, making up 43.93% of the authors, which is below the ideal number.4.Research approaches: The most approaches applied are bibliometrics and observation followed by investigation and statistics. With an annual growth, the use of experimentation and field investigation is still the least.5.Citations: Only the citations of Journal of Shanghai Sports College reaches the peak. The three followers are Journal of Beijing Sports College, Journal of Wuhan Sports College and Sports Science, which attribute to their key disciplines and columns setting. The literature citations ordered from most to least are journals, books, conference proceedings, academic dissertations and electronic documents.
