| English words are the basis of learning English and also one of the indispensable components of English teaching. However, the current situation of English words teaching in Junior High School is unsatisfying. The difficulty in memorizing English words has already become the main obstacle in students’ English learning. The traditional words teaching method does not seem to be very efficient, so how to improve the present situation of students memorizing words has been one of the most difficult problems for most English teachers. Therefore, this research tries to reform the current words teaching situation to some extent, and thus English words teaching method based on Mind Map is proposed.Mind Map is a visual tool for knowledge representing and the external manifestation of radiant thinking. It is also a very useful thinking tool which increases memory effect by the means of color, picture, code and multi dimensions, etc and makes the focus of attention clearly concentrated on the central figure. Mind Map makes full use of the functions of left and right brains, and by following the rules of memory and thinking, it helps people improve the ability of understanding and develop spatial intelligence and creative thinking, thus inspiring the infinite potential of human brain. Mind Map is also helpful for organizing thoughts and information, and finding the connections between new information and former information, enhancing memory and understanding, which is what we need to memorize and understand words. Therefore, this research applies Mind Map on English words teaching aiming to study its effectiveness as a teaching means and learning method. Specifically, the research will explore whether Mind Map can promote students memorizing words effectively and inspire students’ interest in learning English words, thus improving the efficiency of English words teaching.This research selects 103 students from two parallel classes of Grade Seven in the Affiliated High School of Henan Normal University as the research subjects, using the methods of documentation, experiment, questionnaires, interviews and case studies. By combining Mind Map and English words teaching, the author have designed the English words map in accord with the cognitive habits of Junior High School students in Grade Seven. The research started from the early of September in 2014 to the end of January in 2015, lasting one semester. The one-semester teaching practice and tests show that:(1) Mind Map can improve students’ memorization of English words;(2) Mind Map can inspire students’ interest in learning English words and help students cultivate good learning habits;(3) Mind Map is helpful for improving the efficiency of English words teaching. |
