At the beginning of the 20 th century, a curriculum reform was carried out for basic education for primary and junior high schools in Mainland and Taiwan successively. Besides, the guiding principle of textbook diversification was introduced into the Chinese Textbook Reform to broaden the range of teaching materials for teachers. As the link to inherit and carry forward the Chinese traditional culture, the classical Chinese teaching materials in the Chinese textbook for junior high school has been valued both by Mainland and Taiwan and plays a decisive role in the Chinese textbook on both sides of the Taiwan Straits. Hence, a comparative study conducted on the classical Chinese textbook selection for junior high school between both sides f the Taiwan Straits will facilitate finding problems existed in the compilation of the Mainland classical Chinese textbook and improve and perfect it.The project takes the classical Chinese textbooks in the “Compulsory Education Curriculum Standard Experimental Textbook- Chinese”published by Mainland People’s Education Press and the “Junior High School Chinese Textbook” published by Kang Husan Educational Publishing Corp. as study objects to conduct a comparative study. The project consists of five parts. The Introduction part starts with the question why to comparatively study the classical Chinese textbook selection for junior high school between both sides f the Taiwan Straits, then states the current situation of the content related to the project and the research results that have been achieved and determines the specific method employed during the study process. The second chapter illustrates the role of classical Chinese in the Chinese teaching for junior high school at present, the importance of cultivating the Chinese language ability and the present situation of thecompilation of the classical Chinese textbooks for junior high school. The third chapter comparatively analyzes the course standard of the classical Chinese textbook selection on both sides of the Taiwan Straits, preliminarily probes into the differences in the amount and ratio of the classical Chinese textbooks and the grade in which the classical Chinese textbooks are taught between both sides of the Taiwan Straits. The fourth chapter analyzes the similarities and differences in the classical Chinese textbook selection between both sides of the Taiwan Straits from three perspectives, e.g.,The fifth chapter compares the classical Chinese textbook selection of both sides and obtains a teaching from the classical Chinese textbook selection of Taiwan.Based on the above study, the following conclusions are drawn: 1. The Mainland Chinese textbook should increase the amount and ratios of their classical Chinese teaching materials, focus on the influence of the traditional culture on the students during the teaching process to further enhance the sense of national pride and arouse the enthusiasm of patriotism. 2. The Mainland Chinese textbook should prepare literary composition in rhyme in accordance with different styles such that the students can study different literary compositions in rhyme in a clear manner, which further helps the student to establish a clear knowledge hierarchy. 3. The Mainland Chinese textbook should refine the guidance before class and enhance the ability of language use in the exercises after class. Refine the details of the guidance before class and clearly propose the preparation tasks for the learning materials and the knowledge instructions needed to be known, which will help to cultivate the independent learning ability of the students. The enhancement of the ability of language use in the exercises after class will help student to flexibly use the knowledge they learned based on the knowledge they grasped so as to improve the ability of language use.
