As the world language, English is widely used. In China it is earlier learned. Under the influence of the exam-oriented education, English learning focuses on the word memory, translation, the application of sentence pattern and the grammar, which result in the phenomena of dumb English, translation English and grammar English. Students putting in a lot of energy in English get little effect. With the reform of national college entrance examination, students can have English examination twice and get the best results included in the college entrance examination. The author thinks that the college entrance examination reform is to highlight the practical application of English as a language tool, test students’English skills in real context. English teaching focusing on grammar, translation and sentence patterns can’t adapt to the needs of the development of the reform. Elementary school English teaching, as the initial stage of English study, is worth us to explore and research.In English-speaking countries, phonics is a teaching technique that is widely used and highly praised. It conforms to the children’s characteristics and the rules of English learning, and plays an important role in the improvement of students reading ability. First, this study gives the definition and concrete content of pho nics. Second, the study discusses the application strategies of phonics in primary s chool English teaching and the premise and precautions that teachers should have when using phonics teaching method. Third, the study analyzes the problems of u sing phonics in primary school, that is students lack the premise of phonics-pho nemic awareness; Students can’t remember letter sound correspondence and some phonics rules; Students lack semantic understanding when use phonics in primary school. Last, the study presents the strategies of solving those problems, that is li stening more English and adopting synthetic phonics teaching methods to train stu dents’ phonemic awareness; Conducting multi-level systematic phonics training to sol ve the problem of forgetting letter sound correspondence and phonics rules; Using situational phonics teaching and graded readers to improve students’reading compr ehension. Phonics teaching method can be adapted to China’s primary school Engli sh teaching and improve English teaching quality in primary school.This study reveals the common problems of teaching phonics in primary school in China by the method of document research, comparative study and case study.This study offers some suggestions of phonics teaching method in primary school and has a certain reference value for English teachers in primary school to teach phonics.
