English attributive clause is a very important aspect in English grammar that is often tested in College Entrance Examination in China. However, both teachers and students find it a difficult language point. This thesis tries to solve the following problems: 1) What kinds of errors do senior middle school students always commit when using attributive clause? 2) What make senior middle school students commit such errors? 3) What strategies will be implemented to avoid committing these errors?Errors analysis, as a branch of applied linguistics, has become an important component of second language learning and acquisition. In the process of second language acquisition, it is unavoidable for learners to commit errors and the study of learners’ errors has gradually attracted great attention of English teachers. This thesis, by using the theory of error analysis, contrastive analysis, language transfer and interlanguage, is aimed to bring great value to attributive clause learning by the survey and analysis of errors which is committed by senior middle school students in No.1 Senior Middle School in Heishan, Liaoning Province.Based on the problems of senior middle school students in the process of learning English attributive clause, the author designed a series of tests concerning attributive clause and collected 110 papers, of which 102 are valid. From the valid test papers, the author found out the categories of errors: wrong use of relative pronouns, wrong use of relative adverbs, omission errors, coherence errors and redundant component errors. Then, the author put forward some meaningful suggestions in the view of English teaching.The study of English attributive clause errors is meaningful. Theoretically, this study provides a deep understanding of attributive clause and relevant theories. Practically, it sheds insight into the study of attributive clause analysis and makes students know the reason why they commit such errors as well as give some suggestions for teachers’ efficient teaching.
