English attributive clause is not only important but also difficult for senior middle schoolstudents in China. Owing to the great difference between Chinese and English attributiveclauses, students tend to make all kinds of errors in the course of learning English attributiveclause. Through analyzing the errors Chinese students made in the course of masteringEnglish attributive clause, this paper is aimed to dissolve the following questions:(1) Whatkinds are these errors of?(2) What cause these errors?(3) How to prevent these errors fromhappening?Founded on the basis of Contrastive Analysis and Error Analysis, investigation onEnglish attributive clause has been done among the students in the Second Senior MiddleSchool of Lankao County, Henan Province, attempting to find the causes of errors and putforward some guidance for teachers in the process of teaching English attributive clause.Based on the problem of senior middle school students in the process of learningattributive clause, the author designed a paper concerning attributive clause carefully andcollected232papers,among which220papers are valid. After statistic, there are six kinds oferrors usually made by senior middle school students:(1) Misuse of the relative pronouns andadverbs (2) Misuse of "as"(3) Errors in disagreement (4) Errors in "preposition+relativepronoun" structure.(5) Errors in the omission of relative word (6) Problems of Pronounretention.Through the analysis of the valid papers, the author figured out and summarized thecauses of these errors as follows:(1) Emphasizing the language form too much (2) Lack ofsystematic grammar.(3) Short of necessary vocabulary.(4)Language transfer.(5)Over-generalization At last, the author put forward some reasonable suggestions in view of English teaching.(1) Paying more attention to the practice of basic knowledge.(2) Teaching English grammarsystematically.(3) Offering students some strategies on study.(4) Increasing input and outputof English.(5) Taking a right attitude and adopting appropriate teaching method.The study of attributive clause is meaningful in theory; this thesis presents a generalintroduction of attributive clause to teachers, which enables teachers to have a comprehensiveunderstanding of it. Having a clear distinction between Chinese and English attributiveclauses can help learners master the usage of attributive clause. In practice,finding the sourceof errors committed by students in the use of attributive clause can make students know thereason why they made errors here and there and also give some guidance for teachers’efficient teaching.
