With the boost and development of the popularization of higher education in China, the talent cultivation that is the basic function of the colleges and universities has been paid more and more attention, by which a series of queries and arguments about the talent cultivation of the higher education has been brought about. The talent cultivation of high quality is one of the goals for higher education reform in our country. The talents growth has its specific rules. The colleges and universities fulfill the principle of academic freedom and endow the students with the freedom of study to make them enjoy what they have learned, think freely, explore spontaneously, which is one of the prerequisites to cultivate the students’ innovative ability. However, the study freedom of the college and university students is not optimistic, especially in the teaching research-based universities. This paper takes BH University for example, adopts empirical approach, literature research approach, comparative research method, etc. to make a thorough investigation on the characterization, reasons and countermeasures of the students’ study freedom, attempting to seek the benefit and enlightenment to guarantee the study freedom for the teaching research-based college and university students in our country.This paper mainly divides into four parts:The first part explores the relevant theories and conceptual systems of the study freedom. The study freedom is the important branch of the academic freedom, which means that the students have the rights to choose the learning contents, methods and acquire their opinions through thinking and insist on the opinions under the reasonable regulation of laws and ethics. Meanwhile, the students’ academic freedom has the limit, rather than being absolute. The study freedom has experienced endless evolution process during the human history and plays a significant role in the modern college and university talents cultivation.The second part probes into the characterization of the students’ study freedom problems of the teaching research-based colleges and universities in China. It is found through case study of BH University that the study freedom problems of the students in BH University are reflected in the following aspects: in the students’ aspect, it is mainly reflected on the students’ “ignorance”, “squander” and “alienation”. In the university’s aspect, it is mainly reflected on the rigid major bound, mechanical course system, old-fashioned teaching style, inflexible assessment method and the backward teachers’ opinions.The third part analyzes the reasons for the lack of the students’ study freedom in the teaching research-based colleges and universities. The reasons include the following aspects: the students have been constrained by the previous education, group psychology and compliance of authority and so on; there are still some problems such as the talents’ conservative opinions, ossified teaching concepts, offside of teacher’s rights and the formalization of the course elective systems in the university education and management; our traditional education concepts and the teacher-student relationship are conservative; the employment pressure in the society and utilitarianism ideological trend have an influence on the students’ academic attitudes.The fourth part explores the thoughts of guaranteeing the students’ study freedom in the colleges and universities. In the aspect of students, it should enhance the students’ opinions of study freedom and independent thoughts and cultivate students’ automatic learning ability; in the aspect of university system, it should optimize the major and curriculum set, transform teaching method, optimize the assessment strategy, carry out the complete credit system and tutorial system, fulfill the flexible teaching and management system and other policies; in the aspect of society, it should provide the students with the legal support through perfecting relevant laws and regulations.
