The Research About Social Work Intervention OnGrandparents’ Upbringing In City

Grandparents’ upbringing in city means that in contemporary cities, due to busy in work or being poor on material conditions, many young parents commit the teenagers to grandparents’care. The experts called this way of care "Grandparents’ Upbringing". With the speeding up of economic globalization and urbanization, urban residents’ income increase greatly and the living condition improve rapidly. In today’s society, many young people spend most of their time and energy engaging in the work. At the same time, because of the influence of such factors as family divorce, disease and so on, more and more urban family tend to choose the mode of grandparents’ upbringing, namely the grandparents are mainly responsible for raising grandchildren and education but the parents only pay a little bit of attention on the teenagers. Needless to say, grandparents’upbringing in city has many advantages. For instance, it can reduce the heavy burden of the younger generation. Besides, it can also meet the emotional needs of the teenagers. In addition to that, breeding grandchildren can enrich old people in later life. Nevertheless, grandparents’ upbringing still has many potential problems instead of the advantages. Previous researchers on the generation of breeding isolation has done a lot of research and investigation, but the research objects are mainly on rural left-behind children or minority adolescents, then there is little research on urban youth and upbringing. This paper has put the S district of Nanjing as an example, based on the teenagers of grandparents’ upbringing and their family as the research objects, the two communities as the research site.The author have analyzed problems from the angle of social work, and firstly reviewed on previous scholars’literature, then designed a service.The entire service framework of my paper consists of five processes, including the early needs assessment, service design, specific service implementation and service evaluation, improve and perfect.In order to carry out the practice successfully, I have firstly conducted a needs assessment, including the basic situation of the clients and their families and the causes of these problems.And then, I could design the specific ways of services and activities according to the needs assessment.The principles of operability and replicable must be followed in the design process.Then developed a specific service goals on the basis of the result of a needs assessment.At the same time, at the process and in end of the service,we must evaluate the service in a timely manner, including process evaluation and result evaluation. Then the author carried on the corresponding summary and professional reflection. In the end, aimed at the shortages and defects of the process of service, I improved and perfected the intervention on grandparents’upbringing in city from two aspects of social work practice and social environment.By literature review, the author found that grandparents’upbringing in city may easily cause a series of problems such as parent-child separation, grandparents’too much care, easy to form bad personality and miss good education opportunities, etc. These reasons behind the problems which are unable to avoid. In the link of needs assessment, the author learned about that there are some difficulties of grandparents’ upbringing in city, such as lack of economic capacity, the low cultural quality of the grandparents which affects their grandchildren learning, grandparents rarely focus on adolescent mental health and grandparents spoil their grandchildren which lead the teenagers to the lack of independent ability to adapt. These problems contain some objective and subjective causes. The author analyzes that the causes of grandparents’ upbringing in city, mainly including the burden of single-parent family structure, the worries of parents’ disease, the young parents lack of the sense of responsibility and so on. Combined with the result of the needs assessment, the author made a service design on the problem of grandparents’upbringing in city. Besides that, the author respectively developed in adolescents, grandparents, parents and family environment of service goals.The author insisted to base on the theory of social work in the process of the entire service, including Person In Situation, Advantages of Perspective, Family System Theory, etc. With the professional social work method and idea, analysing and solving problems from individuals, families, social environment and other aspects by Structural Family Therapy(improve the bad relationship between family members), Team Work(improve teenagers’ ability to communicate) and Community Work(establish a social support network). The project includes the following several aspects:find the problem, assessment, goal setting, design scheme, implementation plan, activity evaluation and follow up service.In the process of the project, the author specifically designed for four kinds of work plan according to the result of needing assessment. Then relying on professional social work organization which carried out activities. In addition to that, combined with process evaluation and result evaluation, tracking return visit after the project. Studies found that social work intervention can effectively adjust the structure of the family, making their parents, grandparents, grandchildren three generations gain communication skills through the social work intervention. At the same time, with the help of the author and the social workers, the grades of teenagers has been significantly improved at the end of the activities. They learned a lot of study skills and methods which can help to solve the learning difficulties. The teenagers of grandparents’upbringing in city studied and played games together in the activities. They also got the skills of communication with others to carry forward interpersonal harmony. The author found that we can further promote and perfect the social work service, including Psychosocial Treatment Mode and Parent-child Communication Group. Psychosocial Treatment Mode has some function such as relieve the client’s uneasiness, enhance the ability of adjustment and improve the client’s interpersonal skills. Adolescent Social Work can effectively improve the parent-child relationship through personal communication group, thus let parents know more about each other in the interaction, and promoted family harmony and reached the final goal successfully.
