The population problem is the most important issue in sustainable development. With theprocess of urbanization speeding up, as the most livable plateau city, China’s summer capital,the population growth and economic development to Xining city traffic, employment,resources and environment has brought great pressure. Study of Xining city in a certain socialeconomy and natural resources under the conditions of optimum population ecology,determine whether the Xining population overload situation, and help to formulate suitabledevelopment of the construction of the population in Xining city economic policy, in order torealize the ecological, social and economic sustainable development. This article takes XiningCity as the research object, based on the research of population carrying capacity andoptimum population, introduced the general situation of Xining city, using the "P-E-R"regional matching model and energy-ecological footprint model for ecological studies theoptimum population in Xining city. The study found that:(1) The actual population growthrate is much higher than ecological optimum the growth of population, but the gap is not verybig.(2) Water resources under the condition of moderate population capacity is small, theactual population is much larger than the optimum population, the serious shortage of waterresources in Xining city.(3)"P-E-R" area matching model to calculate the xining ecologicaloptimum population of1.9764million people, in2012, and the ecological footprint model tocalculate the Xining city ecological optimum population of1.8179million people in2012.Under the two models of ecological optimum population have differences, but they are smallerthan the actual population, Xining in ecological overload condition."P-E-R" area matchingmodel and energy ecological footprint model2012ecological overload in Xining city of271000people and429500people respectively.(4) Through a regression model for the nextfew years in Xining city ecological optimum population forecast, If we can reasonable planand protect the environment, Xining ecological optimum population capacity will increase....
