Nowadays, vocabulary has become one of the stumbling blocks in English learning, especially for the beginners. So it is high time to search for an effective vocabulary learning method.Learning plan teaching model, which was first put forward in1990s in China, is a learning process during which a learning proposal based on the content of the teaching material and students’background that includes their cognitive style, academic level, and motivation status is presented to develop students’self learning and cooperative learning ability under instructors’essential guidance. It is based on the constructivism and the humanistic theory. Nowadays, it has been widely used and accepted across primary and middle schools in China.This study applies learning plan teaching model in vocabulary teaching and tries to answer the following research questions.(1) Is the Learning plan teaching model helpful to the junior high school students in their vocabulary learning?(2) What kind of problems exist in LP teaching model in current vocabulary teaching?(3) What kind of learning plan in vocabulary teaching is effective to junior high students?(4) How do English teachers improve the efficiency of vocabulary teaching under the LP teaching model?The author first chose two classes in Grade Eight in her junior high school as research subjects, and then conducted vocabulary teaching experiment among them for about three months. During that period, students in the control class were taught in the traditional way, while students in the experimental class were instructed under learning plan teaching model. Before the experiment, the author made a survey and vocabulary test on the two classes, and after the experiment, she did the same survey again to find out whether learning plan teaching model is helpful in vocabulary learning. In order to improve the efficiency of vocabulary learning under learning plan teaching model, she made a survey among the students in the experimental class and all the teachers participated in the research, and then selected some of them to make an interview.Through analyzing the data collected from the experiment, the author got the following findings. First, learning plan teaching model is more effective than the traditional teaching method in vocabulary teaching. Second, a learning plan which conforms to junior middle school students’academic level, cognitive style, and characteristics is suitable to them.At the end of the paper, the author analyzed some shortcomings in this research and offered some suggestions for further study.
