Athletic training can improve the cognitive performance under thesport condition has been evidence by researches, for example, athletescan search the information faster than common people and make anticipationmore accurately. More and more studies explored the relationship betweenbasic cognition and exercise. There were studies about the relationshipbetween exercise and academic performance. Athletes provide a goodopportunity to study the relationship between exercise and cognitionbecause they got intensive training during a long period of time. Thereare practical value to study the relationship between exercise andcognition because exercise can be a way to enhance cognition for specialpopulation. The differences between table tennis players and university studenton rotation judgement in rapid visual spatial tasks were studied in thisresearch by Event Related Potential. The hypothesis was that, due to thelong term practice, table tennis players and university students wouldbe different on the visual processing, stimulus discrimination andcognitive control. The results indicated that:(1)The peak amplitude of P1of athletes was significantly smaller thanthat of students and the peak latency was significantly smaller thanstudent.(2)The peak amplitude of N2of athlete was significantly larger thanthat of students.(3)The peak amplitude of P3of athlete was significantly smaller thanthat of students, but the peak latency was significantly larger thanstudents.(4)Between400-500ms after onset of stimulus, both athlete andstudents had parietal activation. Except that, athletes also hadprefrontal activation, while students also had temporal activation. Conclusions are as follows:(1) The table tennis player had stronger visual attention abilityand cognitive control ability;(2) The table tennis players had high cognitive control duringthe cognitive process;(3) The table tennis athletes had neural efficiency, they consumedless neural resource in completing the task.(4) During the action choosing and preparation, athletes tend to process information in top-down manner, while students tend toprocess information in bottom-up manner.
