Since the new round of curriculum reform, popular music has beengradually introduced in music lessons in middle schools, and it has also beenembodied in the contents of the teaching syllabus and course books. However,due to the negative influence of the exam-oriented system, the importanceattached to the music lessons has not been adequate enough, and theinvestments concerned not sufficient either. Naturally, some music teachersare reluctant to probe into the study on the contents and knowledge related topop music. What’s worse, some teachers even pay no attention to suchknowledge and simply leave it for the students to choose and listen to anypiece of music that is popular at the time.In order to make effective use of the music course and have betterconceived music lessons, this paper aims to explore, discover and analyze thecauses for the problem through theories and statistics by adoptinginvestigation methods of questionnaire and literature analysis.The present paper consists of four parts.Part I serves as a generalintroduction to pop music. The definition of pop music and its development inChina in the recent30years have been discussed and summarized, and theauthor’s viewpoint is clarified.Part II analyzes the present situation of pop music in middle schoolmusic teaching and learning. The evolvement of pop music in the teachingand learning process is briefly discussed. Then, the form of usingquestionnaire is adopted to investigate and analyze how teachers and studentsview and think of pop music. To follow, the universally existing problems inmiddle school music teaching that need prompt solution are pointed out.Part III discusses the adoption of pop music in middle school music teaching and learning practice. the significance of adopting pop music inmiddle school music teaching and learning process, the methods and solutionsof doing so, and the relevant training of professional knowledge of pop music.Some positive new concepts are proposed such as: the pieces should bechosen with scrutiny, students’ appreciating capability should be cultivatedwith deliberation, supplement teaching materials should be planned inaccordance with the specific circumstances and online training of the workingstaff on music teaching should be carried out properly.Part IV is the conclusion. It reiterates the effects of pop music on middleschool music teaching and learning, and it is emphasized that the choosingand using of pop music should be done with restraint. Only when the musicteachers are conscientious and scrupulous in adopting pop music can it play aremarkable role.
