Vocabulary is one of the bases of languages, thus, vocabulary teaching is animportant section in English teaching. With the development of society, higherrequirements are raised to the current English teaching in senior high schools, whichcan be reflected in the form of New Curriculum Standard. According to the standard,senior school students are required to master increasing number of vocabularies andreach much higher lexical levels. Vocabulary learning is also a very difficult task forChinese students. In the thesis, the author analyzed the difficulties of the currentvocabulary teaching, reasons for these difficulties and found that traditional Englishteaching theories and teaching methods can’t satisfy the current vocabulary teaching.Therefore, the efficiency of vocabulary teaching is a very important issue. However,constructivism theory is an advanced theory, and the theory emphasizes that knowledgeacquisition is the process of self-construction, during the process, language situation andinteraction play a very important role. The theory also emphasizes scaffolding teachingand student-oriented teaching. In addition, interactive teaching is a process and it canmake students widely participate in cooperation through mutual effects betweenteachers and students, between students themselves and between students and teachingmaterials. Besides, the thesis integrates constructivism with interactive teaching. Underthe guidance of constructivism theory, English vocabulary teaching in senior highschools is conducted successfully through all kinds of teaching activity designs. At thesame time, constructivism theory has a positive impact on English vocabulary teachingin senior high schools. On one hand, it is helpful for stimulating students’ motivations and interests, promoting their learning abilities and self-construction of knowledge. Onthe other hand, it can inspire teachers’ self-reflection and improve their teachingabilities.
