Student essay is composed by sentences. Sentence syntactic features of theessay has been regarded as important indicators of the quality of writing in recentyears. Researchers analyze syntactic characteristics of pupils composition fromthree angles,including Chinese syntactic complexity of sentences, sentencecategory and scntcncc type. Syntactic complexity, also known as syntacticmaturity, refers to the scope and form of output in the form of language and thedegree of complexity. Sentence is divided into declarative, interrogative,imperative sentences and exclamatory according to the tone of the sentence.Sentence type includes a single sentence and a complex sentcncc types based onstructural features.Previous domestic and foreign rcscarch have mainly focusedEnglish writing,and have achieved certain results. In contrast, few researchershave studied the syntactic features of Chinese writing.In domestic and foreignrelevant research.There is a lack of research about quality writing from syntacticcomplexity,sentence category and sentence type these three aspects of language.So it is necessary to study composition syntactic features of pupils essay.This study aims to measure the main language syntactic features of primaryschool composition and writi’ng level.Its helpful for the establishment of theindex system which assesses the quality of primary school essay and writing level.This study summarizes the relevant theory and research results, thensystematically analyze syntactic features of different levels with same tille essaysand different themes with a same level essays. The study carry out from syntactic complexity, sentence category and sentence type these three aspects of language.The main purpose is to investigate whether syntactic compiexity,sentencecategory and sentence type of primary school composition change with differentlevels of composition.Meanwhile, the study also attempts to explore whetherthere are differences in syntactic features among scenery,character and mattersthese three themes essays.This research mainly draw the following conclusions:1.Through the study of syntactic complexity of general and excellent essaywith the same title, we find if the unit length of sentence is longer, the greater thedensity of clause, the more complex syntax, then the rating of essay is higher, thewriting quality is higher. We can speculate that the syntactic complexity has animpact on the quality of writing, and also reflects writing levels of primary schoolstudents to some extent.2,In the sentence category usage, there is almost no difference in statementsuse frequency between excellent essay and general essay, and use frequency ofdeclarative sentences in two types of writing is significantly higher than usefrequency of other three sentence categories.lt indicates writing level has nothingto do with the use frequency of some sentence category, but may be related to therichness of the sentence category. Thus, we can conclude that the more diversethe sentence categories, the higher writing level.3.In the sentence type usage,use frequency of complex sentences is higherthan use frequency of single sentences between general essay and excellentessay.But compared with the general essay,excel lent essay uses more complex sentences. Therefore, we can conclude that the level of writing is related to usefrequency of complex sentences and single sentences,students whoes writingability is strong and composition level is high, uses complex sentences moreoften.They are better at writing more complex, more diverse structure sentence.4.Different themes essays show different characteristics on syntacticcomplexity,sentence category and sentence type. In terms of syntactic complexity,integrating unit length and clause density these two indicators to measure, themost complex syntax is scenery essay, the second complex syntax is characteressay and the syntactic complexity of matters essay is least complex.5.In terms of sentence category,no matter what the theme of the article,declarative sentences constitute the main category of essay. The exclamatorysentences are used more in the scenery composition,maybe because scenery essaygenerally depicts beautiful scenery, small authors used to write exclamatorysentences to express the love for nature.6. In terms of sentence type, no matter what the theme of the article, the usefrequency of complex sentences is far beyond the use frequency of singlesentences. It indicates in the upper primary stage, students with a high writinglevel are good at writing more complex sentence instead of single sentences.ltillustrates writing skills of primary school students have been improved.
