Based on the vocabulary learning situation in Chinese primary schools and pupils’cognition levels, the author chose the phonics method as one of vocabulary teaching method to research. My study attempts to apply phonics to the vocabulary teaching for a group of learners in primary school. The study focuses on whether the application of phonics in English vocabulary teaching in primary school is effective on developing students’word writing and word reading ability. The experiment lasted sixteen weeks to study the effect of applying phonics method in vocabulary teaching. The students(the experimental group) was trained with Phonics method in teaching vocabulary. Phonics contains the skills of spelling, the letters and letter combinations of44basic pronunciation and some relation between spelling and pronunciation. It makes students to read the words by the letters and letter combinations and write the words by the pronunciation. The pretest and the posttest of word reading tests and word spelling tests led to the following findings:First, the experimental group students who possessing phonics knowledge could read and spell words more accurately and fluently. Second, the students of the experimental group can remember the word quickly and it is not easy to forget. Third, after the training the experimental group participants became more confident in learning vocabulary.Phonics is an effective vocabulary teaching strategies. Teachers should provide pupils with opportunities to learn and use phonics in vocabulary teaching; Using the phonics method students can remember the word quickly, and read and spell words more accurately and fluently. But phonics can not directly reflect the meaning and usage of the word, teachers should provide other methods to assist phonics. |
