In the late twentieth Century, studies of teacher quality became a trend of teachereducational reform, and were paid much attention to by many scholars in the world. Today,the rapid development of China requires a higher level of education in China, especiallyEnglish education. The traditional English educational belief and teaching methods havelagged behind the need of the society in China, therefore, English education needs reformand improvement. The improvement of English education can do nothing withoutimproving the quality of teachers. So improving the quality of teachers means that theteachers should strengthen their professional level, namely the professional development ofteachers. The survey of the professional quality of teachers and the problems for theteacher professional development has an important guiding significance for teacherprofessional development and improvement.This study adopted questionnaire and interview as research methods, the subjects ofthe study were150teachers from13Kunshan junior high schools. The following threeresearch questions are addressed in the study:What is the basic quality of English teachers in junior high schools?What is the quality of English teachers’ teaching research in junior high schools?What Countermeasures can be taken for improving the quality of English teachers injunior high schools?After a careful study of the data from the questionnaire and interview, some mainfindings of the study are summarized as follows:Firstly, the results of the study show the following basic quality of English teachers inKunshan junior high school: English teachers are young with good English professionalknowledge; they use modern teaching methods and most of their teaching is effective andsuccessful; they have advanced teaching belief, rich teaching experiences, with an initial self-development consciousness; they pay little attention to the role of culture in Englishteaching.Secondly, the results of the study show the following quality of English teachersteaching research in Kunshan junior high school: Most teachers pay little attention to thenew development of teaching research abroad and in China, and lack of guidance of theadvanced theory in teaching research; they have the preliminary research ability,cooperation, discussion and communication with their colleagues are the main form ofteaching research activities; their teaching research is limited to their own teachingexperiences, they lack initiative enthusiasm to participate in the research, and the researchlevel is low.Thirdly, the results of the study show the following measures to improve the qualityof English teachers in Kunshan junior high school: we should strengthen professionaltraining, improve the professional quality, optimize evaluation system, and reduce theworking pressure. We should also establish and improve research system, and improve theresearch quality at the same timeFrom the study, we learn that we should renew teaching ideas, improve teachingmethods, pay more attention to teaching research, and improve the level of research. Weshould also pay more attention to English culture, and the cultural communication.
