Narrative therapy is an important method in social work practice. It is a theory and technology that involves listening to, telling and retelling stories which is about unique people and challenges and problems they encounter in their lives. The article chooses narrative therapy as its research topic, placing particular stress on the application of narrative therapy and some restraining factors that affects the application of narrative therapy. This article introduces something about narrative therapy, including the related concepts of "narrative" and "narrative therapy", the origin and the development, and introduces the theoretical source, the fundamental philosophy and skills by using literature method. Narrative therapy objects to traditional therapies that thinks the problems are equal to people. Narrative therapy thinks "The problem is the problem, the person is not the problem", the problems are only the outcomes that our society results in; And narrative therapy values the clients’abilities and approves ourselves are our own expert who helps solve our problems. Narrative therapy separates the problems from people, names the problems and riches people’s thin stories and consolidates stories with positive energy. Narrative therapy pays most attention to relatively vulnerable groups like children, teenagers, college students, women, the old. These members of the groups are faced with many psychological and social adaptation problems for various reasons. Narrative therapy can solve their problems well technically with its idea and skills. However, because of unique national conditions of China, narrative therapy application and popularization in China has many limitations. And the specific performance of the limitations in:the culture and social environment impacts the story-telling greatly. Chinese especially Chinese rural residents are not good at expressing so that their words couldn’t describe their stories well. The mainstream opinions have influence on persons’perspective so that persons tend to assert something by themselves and they can not make their stories rich. People often care about what others look upon them so they are afraid to express their real feeling about their problems. The patterned face by reason of persons’work affects the effect on narrative therapy. Generally, narrative therapy provides relatively vulnerable groups with help technically. If without the support of social policy, narrative therapy will face many obstacles when it solves some problems and its effect will be limited. Though there are some restraining factors affecting narrative therapy, there also is the necessity and validity of narrative therapy when solving the problems of children, teenagers, college students, women and the old. After summarizing the article, combining with Chinese national conditions, the writer put forward her own advice on how to expand application of narrative therapy at last.
